Mozilla and Have I Been Pwned team up on leaked login tool
Mozilla has announced that it will soon test a feature developed in collaboration with security researcher Troy Hunt, the administrator of Have I Been Pwned. With this, Firefox users should be able to receive a warning about leaked logins.
Mozilla explains that the feature is called Firefox Monitor. From the description it can only be concluded that it is a site where users of the browser can enter their e-mail address to check via Hibp whether it appears in known leaked databases. They can then also set them to receive a warning if the email address appears in a newly leaked database. This functionality is very similar to what Hunt already offers via Hibp itself. Searching by email address should be done in a privacy-friendly manner, according to Mozilla. The organization will start a test next week among a quarter of a million users, mostly Americans.
Password manager 1Password also announces that users can now also search by email address if their logins have been leaked, after it already checked whether the password people used existed in Hibp’s database. AgileBits, the developer of 1Password, writes that in the so-called Watchtower function, users can view a comprehensive report that shows where action is needed. In addition, the feature shows additional information about the specific data breach where data was released.
Have I Been Pwned is a site where people can check whether this has been leaked based on their email address or password, for example through a hack on an online service. It is possible to set a notification to an e-mail address.
