Mortal Kombat movie will be released April 16, 2021
The previously announced Mortal Kombat movie will be released in cinemas on April 16. The film can also be streamed immediately on the HBO Max streaming service from that date, although the service will not be available in Europe at that time.
The announcement release on April 16 means the film has been delayed by several months. Last year a release period of March 2021 was mentioned and at the end of last year that was brought forward to January 15th. The current postponement until April 16 seems to be caused by the corona pandemic. Producer Todd Garner said last month that the pandemic has had an impact on the schedule and that the film would only get a release date when the cinemas reopen.
It is a live action film and can be regarded as a Mortal Kombat reboot; in 1995 and 1997, two live action Mortal Kombat films were released. The new film will be directed by Australian Simon McQuoid, produced by New Line Cinema and shot in studios in the southern Australian city of Adelaide. It is likely that Australian landscapes will be part of the film. Next year, more will be known about the film, as Garner says it’s somewhere a trailer will be released in the new year.
The announcement of the new release date for the Mortal Kombat film comes shortly after WarnerMedia announced that it will release all films planned for 2021, in addition to the theatrical release, on HBO Max simultaneously. That also applies to Mortal Kombat. However, HBO Max is currently only available in the US. The service will also come to Europe in the second half of 2021, but that will be at least a few months after the cinema release of Mortal Kombat.
