Mojang makes digital card game Scrolls free and changes name to Caller’s Bane
Minecraft developer Mojang has announced that his digital card game Scrolls, which came out in 2011, is now free to play. That change goes hand in hand with a name change, which means that the game now goes through life as Caller’s Bane.
Mojang has not disclosed details of the name change, writing only that it is “sure there is a good reason” and that it “maybe the old name didn’t sound right.” The creation of the old Scrolls name was not without obstacles at the time, so a friendly solution was eventually reached between Bethesda, known from The Elder Scrolls, and Mojang, allowing the name to be used. Bethesda announced a new installment in the series at E3.
The motivation for making the game free is also not mentioned, other than that Mojang says that he has worked towards this moment for a long time. There is now a so-called community server in the air to play the game, although this means that existing players have to start with a clean slate because they can’t take their collection with them. There is also a way to host a server yourself, with the option to provide players with a complete collection right away.
The game’s official servers went offline earlier this year after development was halted in 2015. The game is a collectible card game with elements of a board game. Mojang unveiled the game in 2011.
