Modular Framework Laptop Maker Is Working On New Modular Products
Framework, the maker of the modular laptop of the same name, has secured an investment of $18 million. With that money, Framework will develop new modular and repairable products, make new modules for the laptop and sell them in more countries.
That writes Framework founder Nirav Patel in a blog post. It is the first major investment round for Framework since the seed phase, which took place in the summer of 2021. Framework has raised $18 million in this ‘Series A’ round, with Spark Capital as the main investor, an investment company that previously invested in Oculus, among others.
Framework will use the new investments in the near term to develop “new product categories,” Patel said. He says he can’t share yet which products these will be, but emphasizes the investment is aimed at “upgrading, customizing and repairing more consumer electronics faster.” In addition, the money is being invested in developing new modules for the modular Framework Laptop and there are plans to sell the laptop in more countries.
According to Patel, Framework will expand the Framework Marketplace in 2022, the store it opened in November for parts and upgrades. Framework wants to offer space in the Marketplace for the sale and purchase of second-hand parts and products. The first steps in this direction have been taken through the Expansion Card Developer Program, which is intended for people to develop products for the expansion slot of the laptop. More is also coming to the Framework Laptop ecosystem in 2022, Patel writes. The Framework Laptop has been on sale in Europe since December, but not yet in the Benelux.
