Modders working on Fallout: Van Buren remake via Fallout: New Vegas mod
A group of modders are working on a remake of the deleted Fallout 2 sequel Van Buren. For this, the modders use the Fallout: New Vegas game. The makers are now working on a demo for the mod, when it should be released is unknown.
The makers want to stay true to the original storyline of Van Buren with the Revelation Blue mod. Players start in Tibbets Prison, a prison in the US state of Arizona. The game will be set in the Midwest Commonwealth, featuring four US states and set in 2253; 28 years before Fallout: New Vegas.
The remake will ignore the events of New Vegas as canon, as the two games share many characters, factions, story elements and lore. Presumably the modders mean by this that the story elements of the two games do not fit together, so Van Buren should not be seen as a prequel. After the remake is released, the modders want to work on DLC such as new weapons, locations and factions.
The mod was announced via Nexus Mods, but after an article by PC Gamer talking about a playable demo, the announcement was taken offline. The makers emphasize that they are still working on the remake; once the demo is ready they will release it.
Originally, the remake was simply called Fallout Van Buren Remake, but the Van Buren trademark rights are now owned by developer inXile Entertainment. That is why the name has been changed to Revelation Blue.
Although Van Buren has never appeared, story elements have been announced before. For example, the game starts in a prison from which the player has to escape and a conflict between the Brotherhood of Steel and the New California Republic is central. A final name for the game has never been disclosed; Van Buren was the code name that developer Black Isle Studios gave the game. This company went bankrupt in 2003, stopping development of the game. Ex-employees of this developer then founded Obsidian Entertainment, which released Fallout: New Vegas in 2010.
