Modders use unreleased RTX Remix tool to polish up old games

Nvidia’s RTX Remix tool has already been used to add RTX effects to old games. Modders have used files from Portal with RTX to give games like Half-Life 2 a graphical upgrade. RTX Remix will not officially appear until 2023.

Modders managed to add RTX effects to games by using Portal. Nvidia released free RTX DLC for Portal in December that already used the RTX Remix technology. Modders found out that they could transfer the RTX Remix files from Portal with RTX to the files of other games. In addition, by adjusting the Sky Textures setting in the RTX Remix developer menu, they have already managed to provide some classic games with RTX effects, while the tool is not officially out yet.

RTX mods are already available for Half-Life 2, among others, SWAT 4 and Max Payne. The latter required a bit more work, as an extra d3d8to9 tool was needed to get that game working with RTX Remix. Which writes Wccftechthat the mud has spoken. Some games also sometimes have to deal with graphical bugs. They may be resolved when Nvidia actually releases the tool next year. The ‘AI Texture Super Resolution’ technique is also currently missing. That means the textures in the mods haven’t gotten a graphical polish.

RTX Remix causes the old render APIs and systems of the games to be automatically replaced with the 64bit Vulkan renderer. This gives games DLSS and ray tracing effects, including lighting and shadows rendered in real time.
