Modders use unreleased RTX Remix tool to polish old games
Nvidia’s RTX Remix tool has already been used to add RTX effects to old games. Modders have used files from Portal with RTX to provide games like Half-Life 2 with a graphics upgrade. RTX Remix will not officially be released until 2023.
Modders managed to add RTX effects to games using Portal. Nvidia released free RTX DLC for Portal in December that already used the RTX Remix technology. Modders found out that they could transfer the RTX Remix files from Portal with RTX into the files of other games. By also adjusting the Sky Textures setting in the RTX Remix developer menu, they have already managed to provide a number of classic games with RTX effects, even though the tool is not yet officially released.
There are already RTX mods available for, among others, Half-Life 2, S.W.A.T.4 and Max Payne. The latter required a bit more work, as an additional d3d8to9 tool was needed to get that game working with RTX Remix. That writes Wccftechthat the mud has spoken. Some games also sometimes suffer from graphical bugs. These may be resolved if Nvidia actually releases the tool next year. The ‘AI Texture Super Resolution’ technology is also currently missing. This means that the textures in the mods have not received a graphical polish.
RTX Remix ensures that the old render APIs and systems of the games are automatically replaced by the 64bit Vulkan renderer. This gives games DLSS and ray tracing effects, including lighting and shadows being rendered in real time.
