MMD announces Philips monitor with quantum dots

MMD has announced a Philips monitor with a quantum dot screen. It would be the first monitor with such a screen. For the screen with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, MMD works together with QD Vision.

Televisions based on quantum dots have been around for some time. Sony uses it under the Triluminos name, but now MMD has equipped the first monitor with it. Quantum dots are nanocrystals that manufacturers use for a film for the backlight. Red and green light are generated by converting part of the blue light using this film, which has a beneficial effect on the color spectrum. As a result, color filters can be used that allow more light to pass through, which can reduce the energy consumption of the screen. The company behind the technology is called QD vision and MMD works together with this group.

The first monitor with quantum dots is the 276E6ADS in the E-series. MMD claims that the screen can display 99 percent of the AdobeRGB color space and 100 percent of the sRGB spectrum. The screen diagonal is 27 inches and the resolution is 1920×1080 pixels. The maximum brightness of the IPS screen is 300cd/m² and the gray-to-gray response time is 14ms, but when SmartResponse is activated it is 5ms. The connections of the 276E6ADS are VGA, DVI-D and HDMI, and there is also support for MHL.

The screen is on the market in China immediately and will be released in Europe in mid-2015, for an unknown price.
