Mintbox Mini 2 PC Comes With Linux Mint 19 For $299

At the same time as Linux Mint 19 was released, the Linux Mint team announced that the Mintbox Mini 2 PCs will be available for a starting price of $299. First deliveries are expected around July 15, according to manufacturer CompuLab.

CompuLab reports that the Mintbox Mini 2 has a price of 299 dollars, which amounts to about 256 euros. The Pro version of the minicomputer is priced at $349. The difference between the two models is that the basic version has 4GB of DDR3 memory on board, while the Pro variant has double the amount. The maximum memory is 16GB. The storage also differs, for example, the basic variant has an SSD with a capacity of 64GB and the Pro version has 120GB. Both PCs run on a Celeron J3455 CPU from Intel, as was also known at the time of the announcement.

The minicomputers run the Linux Mint 19 distribution, which has just been released. This version is based on version 4.15 of the Linux kernel and on the 18.04 release of Ubuntu. Users can expect security updates until 2023 and there are three versions in the form of Cinnamon, Xfce and Mate. Updates include Timeshift and a modified Update Manager. The first feature, which was also found in Mint 18.3 but is now ‘central to the update strategy’, makes it possible to revert to a functional snapshot from the past, for example if the system encounters problems.

According to CompuLab, orders for the Mintbox models will ship in mid-July. It should also be possible to order the systems via Amazon in August.
