Minix announces two 4k media players with Android 4.4

Minix announced two new media players under its own name last weekend. The Neo X8 and Neo X8s run on Android 4.4 and have XBMC as standard. They are both suitable for playing 4k content, the manufacturer announced.

The Neo X8 features a 2GHz S802 soc from Amlogic. In addition, there is 2GB of RAM and 8GB of flash storage, according to Minix. The more expensive brother of the Neo X8, the X8s, runs on a 2GHz S802-H-soc, with which Dolby Digital and DTS are fully supported. Furthermore, the X8s has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of flash storage. Both the X8 and the X8s have three USB 2.0 inputs and an OTG input.

To make a network connection, 802.11n WiFi and a 100Mbit/s Ethernet connection can be found in both players. The X8s also offers dual-band Wi-Fi on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies. Finally, with both the X8 and the X8s it is possible to create a hotspot via a card reader.

Both media players can play 4k content according to Minix. It should be noted that due to the limitation of the HDMI 1.4 output, the media players can transmit the footage at a maximum of 30 fps. Significantly higher frame rates are only possible with HDMI 2.0.

Finally, Minix announced a new Airmouse, the Neo M1 remote. This includes a gyroscope and a rechargeable lithium battery. The Neo M1 supports Android, Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

Prices are not yet known for the new Airmouse and the media players, but Minix does say that the X8s will be more expensive than the X8. Both media players will be launched in May.
