Minecraft has been sold over a hundred million times
Microsoft has announced that more than 100 million copies of Minecraft have been sold across all platforms. This makes the game the most sold game of all time after Tetris. The game originated in 2009 as a Java applet.
Minecraft started as an indie game but has grown into a multimillion-dollar franchise. Mojang developed the game and Microsoft bought the studio in 2014 for 2.5 billion dollars. At the time, the game had sold fifty million copies, now that number has doubled, according to Microsoft.
Microsoft has collected the sales statistics in an infographic. At the time of publication, 106,859,741 copies of the game had been sold. It involves selling on all platforms; Minecraft has been released on PC, for a variety of consoles and handhelds, as an app for smartphones and tablets and there is a VR version for the Samsung Gear VR and later the Oculus Rift.
Since the beginning of 2016, Microsoft has sold an average of 53,000 copies of the game per day. That equates to more than nineteen million copies per year. The publisher says the game will be played all over the world. More than 40 million players are active every month.
In the Wikipedia list of the best-selling video games of all time on all platforms, Minecraft rises to second place. Until recently, Wii Sports was still in that spot, with some 83 million copies. That game is so high because it was bundled with the Nintendo Wii. Tetris is by far the most successful game with 495 million copies sold, mainly for smartphones.
