Minecraft has been sold over 200 million times
More than 200 million copies of Minecraft have been sold since the game was released in 2009. The milestone of 100 million copies was reached in 2016. According to Microsoft, there are now 126 million Minecraft players on a monthly basis.
Microsoft is releasing the numbers in honor of the game’s 11th anniversary last Sunday. The first alpha version of the game was released on May 17, 2009. Minecraft developer Mojang announced a name change and new logo over the weekend. The new name is Mojang Studios and this includes several studios worldwide.
Mojang was acquired by Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion. At the time, over 50 million copies of the game had been sold for PC and consoles. The game continued to grow after the acquisition and two years later the number of copies sold reached 100 million. In about four years, another 100 million copies have been added, according to the figures that Microsoft is now publishing.
Minecraft is available on PCs, consoles and mobile devices. There are also various spin-offs, such as the smartphone game Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Dungeons, a top-down dungeon crawler, will be released next week.
