Microsoft will update Windows RT tablets in September
Microsoft will update Windows RT tablets to Windows 8.1 RT Update 3 in September. Earlier, the software maker announced that Windows RT will not get a variant of Windows 10. The tablets will remain stuck at 8.1.
The update is coming in September, so say Microsoft CEO Gabriel Aul. Windows 8.1 RT Update 3 only comes to tablets that run Windows RT, the variant of Windows 8 and 8.1 intended for tablets with ARM processors. The best known are the Surface 2 and Lumia 2520, both from Microsoft itself.
It is unknown what the update will entail, Microsoft only says that it will share more about it at a later time. Presumably, it will bring some of Windows 10’s default apps and services to the RT tablets, such as Groove Music and the Edge browser.
Unlike ARM tablets, there is a variant of Windows 10 for ARM smartphones. The Lumia line and some models from other manufacturers can look forward to an update to Windows 10 mobile later this year.
