Microsoft will start support for Windows Phone 8.1 on June 24
Microsoft has announced that the support period for Windows Phone 8.1 will start from June 24. Support will continue until July 11, 2017. In the meantime, Microsoft will continue to roll out updates.
Microsoft’s website states that the so-called product lifecycle, or the active support period of Windows Phone 8.1, will start on June 24. Support will continue until July 11, 2017. It is striking that Microsoft does not yet mention an end date for the support period for Windows Phone 8, but rather a period of 36 months. With that, the end of support could be expected in late 2015 or early 2016.
Windows Phone 8.1 can be seen as a major update for Microsoft’s mobile operating system. The update includes some new ideas and features, such as the Action Center, a new file manager, and the changed home screen. Most notable, however, is Cortana, Microsoft’s new voice assistant.
The software giant has announced that the manufacturer will distribute the 8.1 update over-the-air on Windows Phone 8 devices next summer, but buyers of a Nokia Lumia 630 and Lumia 930 will already run on the updated operating system by default. In addition, developers have been able to download the Preview version from the Windows Phone App Studio website for some time now.
