Microsoft will remove Internet Explorer 11 via Edge update in February
Microsoft will release an update to Edge in February that will permanently disable Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 10 systems. That does not happen, as was initially intended, with a Windows update.
Microsoft gives in an update Learn more about phasing out and disabling Internet Explorer. The company had long stopped supporting it, but now there are more details about its permanent removal.
On February 14, Microsoft will release an update for Microsoft Edge on Windows 10. Initially, disabling IE11 would be done via a Windows update, but this is done via the browser. According to Microsoft, this is to provide a ‘better user experience’ and to better support organizations when migrating users.
With the update, all installations of Internet Explorer 11 that are still active will be automatically redirected to Edge. Microsoft also cares tips for setting a policy which removes IE11 as an icon from the taskbar or start menu. The company itself will do this definitively in June of next year. During the monthly update cycle on June 13, Internet Explorer 11 icons will be removed.
