Microsoft would have made the decision to release the next version of the HoloLens at a later date. Instead of a small improvement in the meantime, the company immediately focuses on the development of a considerably modified version, which it wants to release in 2019.

The information comes from Paul Thurrot, who relies on anonymous sources with knowledge of the development of the augmented reality glasses HoloLens. He reports that the removal of a marginally modified version has to do with Microsoft not experiencing pressure from competitors in the field of ar. He points out that companies such as Magic Leap are working on the technology, but are not yet able to offer headsets.

Therefore, there would be no need to release the second version of the HoloLens as it initially would have been on the roadmap. Microsoft would now have chosen to improve the third version of the roadmap, bringing it closer to a ‘generational leap’ and maintaining the lead over the competition. Only by skipping the second iteration would Microsoft be able to offer the third version as early as 2019, Thurrot said.

The current HoloLens will continue to receive software updates from Microsoft, he adds. The devkit has been on sale in various European countries since October for a price of 3299 euros. It is expected that the next version will have a lower price. However, according to this report, that version is still pending. So far, Microsoft is said to have sold ‘several thousand’ copies of the HoloLens.
