Microsoft will release a successor to Microsoft Office Mac 2011 at the end of this year. This means that the gap that the office suite has with the Windows version should probably be made up, at least partly. The release may coincide with that of iOS and Android.

The arrival of a new version of Office Mac was announced by the new Office CEO in Germany, Thorsten Hübschen, during the Cebit, Computerwoche writes. The suite is to follow Office Mac 2011, which appeared in 2010. In that year, Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit was also incorporated into Microsoft’s Office branch. Before that, it was a relatively independent team within the Specialized Devices and Applications Group of the Entertainment & Devices division.

The current Windows version of Office is the 2013 version, which was released in October and contains many functionality that the Mac version lacks. Incidentally, Office Mac has received support for the cloud service Office 365.

A release late this year for a new Mac version may coincide with the release of Office versions for Android and iOS. Previously, there were rumors that these versions would be released in the fall of 2014. Microsoft hinted at the arrival of an Android version at its SharePoint conference last week, when the company announced an Android SDK.
