Microsoft will provide Surface devices running Windows with firmware and driver updates for two years longer. Previously, update support stopped after four years, which now becomes six years. The new policy applies to all devices released since January 2021.

The firmware and driver update support is a minimum; it happens that Microsoft extends this support. For example, the fifth generation Surface Pro will receive driver and firmware updates until January 2024, while this device was released in June 2017. Company indicates extend update support for all Windows Surface devices to six years.

Microsoft does not say why it extended this support. This update policy was announced in early October via a modified support page, but was only recently discovered. The support does not apply to Android devices such as the Duo phones, whose update support period has expired.
