Microsoft will now open ‘incompatible sites’ in IE by default in Edge

Microsoft will automatically open certain websites that do not work properly in Internet Explorer in Edge. The company maintains a list of such sites. The user is also immediately given the option to import their IE data to the new browser.

The feature appears in IE 11, BornCity discovered . It is not clear exactly which pages are covered by the policy. Microsoft says it maintains a list of pages that are incompatible with Internet Explorer, but not what criteria it follows.

Edge opens immediately to users who visit one of those sites in IE. The new browser contains a pop-up stating that the website does not work in IE and that Microsoft ‘recommends’ to continue using Edge. The user then only has the option to click on ‘Continue browsing’. There is also a possibility to import data such as favorites, saved websites and history from IE into Edge.

It is then no longer possible to visit the original site in Internet Explorer at all. In that browser, users are directed to a support page . System administrators can manually disable the feature by RedirectSitesFromInternetExplorerRedirectModeturning it off in the policies. The feature requires users to be on the Stable version of Edge 87.
