Microsoft will discontinue Basic Auth protocol for Outlook users on September 16
Microsoft will end support for the Basic Authentication protocol on personal Outlook, Hotmail and Live.com accounts on September 16. From that moment on, you can only log in via apps or websites that support the more secure Modern Authentication protocol.
Basic Authentication made it according to Microsoft easy for malicious parties to intercept usernames and passwords. Through this protocol, Outlook, Hotmail and Live.com users only had to enter their username and password to log in. The Modern Authentication protocol is said to be more secure and uses additional backend processes and tokens. They must ensure a more secure web environment.
Outlook, Hotmail and Live.com users who want to log in to a website or application without support for Modern Authentication after September 16 will no longer be able to do so. Popular email apps such as Outlook, Apple Mail and Thunderbird already support the new protocol, according to Microsoft.
