Microsoft warns of blue screen of death after recent Windows preview update
A recent update for Windows 10 and 11 causes a blue screen of death for an unknown number of users. It is not known why this happens. There is no solution available yet, but one of the updates sometimes uninstalls itself to solve the problem.
Microsoft warns on a support page for the problem. This arose shortly after the release of a preview version of Windows 11, KB5029351and Windows 10, KB5029331. These are cumulative updates and not security updates like the ones shipped earlier this month during Patch Tuesday. The update included fixes for issues in the Search app and a preview of a new backup tool.
In the two versions of the operating system, an unknown number of users see a blue screen of death. It is not known how large the group of users this occurs is, but it seems to mainly concern users of MSI motherboards. They will see the error code 0x0000005D, the bug UNSUPPORTED_PROCESSOR.
Microsoft does not yet have a solution or mitigation for the problem. The company says it is still investigating the reports and calls on users to report them via the Feedback app. In some cases, the update would uninstall itself automatically. At least that would happen on Windows 11, after the user restarts the device a number of times.
