‘Microsoft wants to pay $10 billion for 49 percent of ChatGPT maker’
Microsoft would like to invest $10 billion in ChatGPT maker OpenAI and would want 49 percent of its shares. The investment would be accompanied by other investors, who together would also own 49 percent of OpenAI.
OpenAI and Microsoft are according to Semafor sources has been in discussions in recent weeks about the investment, which would see Microsoft get 75 percent of OpenAI’s profits until the company recoups its investment. After that, Microsoft would own 49 percent of OpenAI and other investors would own 49 percent. A nonprofit would then hold the remaining 2 percent of OpenAI.
The investment would value OpenAI at $29 billion. earlier Wall Street Journal sources said already that investment companies Thrive Capital and Founders Fund were interested in part of OpenAI, where a valuation of $29 billion was also mentioned. That newspaper already wrote in October that Microsoft was in discussions to acquire a larger share of OpenAI.
Microsoft and OpenAI are no strangers to each other: in 2019, the company already invested a billion dollars in OpenAI. In addition, The Information sources recently said that Microsoft is looking to integrate ChatGPT into Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Bing. Microsoft and OpenAI declined to comment on the deal. OpenAI released a public version of AI conversation tool ChatGPT in November.
