Microsoft wants to compete with Chromebooks with cheap Windows laptops
Microsoft has announced a price offensive to better compete with cheap Chromebooks. For example, HP comes with a laptop that should cost less than 150 euros and Acer and Toshiba also come with cheap models.
Microsoft CEO Kevin Turner announced this during a meeting, the Worldwide Partner Conference, reports The Verge. This year, laptop manufacturers should come up with cheap laptops that can compete with models that run Google’s Chrome OS. Microsoft does not want to hand over the budget market, according to Turner.
For example, HP will come before the holidays with a cheap laptop that will get a price of 199 dollars, converted about 146 euros. Specifications have not yet been announced. Turner did announce that Acer also comes with a cheap laptop: a 15.6 “model with Celeron processor for 249 dollars, converted about 183 euros. Toshiba comes with an 11.6 “laptop for the same price. It is unclear whether the cheap models will also come to Europe.
HP also plans to release 7″ and 8″ models for just $99. However, this concerns Windows tablets, which, like the laptops, are planned for this year.
Several manufacturers have released low-cost Chromebooks, starting at around $200. These laptops run on Google’s Chrome OS; with the aggressive pricing, Google probably wants to gain market share.
