Microsoft has filed a patent for a fold-out docking station for smartphones. The accessory can be connected to the PC and serves as a regular station for telephones and as an independent speaker for the use of VoIP programs.

Not only does the device have built-in speakers and a microphone for hands-free calling, but it can also function as an independent device for making calls in VoIP programs such as Skype separately from the smartphone. The US Patent Office has shown the patent called ‘User Input Peripheral’ on its website.

The accessory’s design resembles a shell that can be flipped open and closed. To make calls with Skype, both round parts of the docking station have to be folded together, while placing a smartphone is only possible when the station is folded open. In both modes, functions are available to open VoIP apps on the PC or smartphone.

When the device is closed, audible and visual notifications are still possible. The device can be wired or wirelessly connected to the PC or smartphone via Bluetooth and can also give notifications of incoming calls when the PC is in sleep mode.

The images accompanying the Microsoft application show an iPhone in the docking station, so the accessory may be released specifically for iPhones. It is unknown when and if it will actually come to market.
