Microsoft has patented a system where users can start a session on a PC and pick up where they left off on a smartphone or tablet. The technology can be used in Windows 8.

The session can be stored on a server or on a storage medium that users carry with them patent application. The patent refers to a ‘task management application’, a session management application that keeps track of what the user does on a device and which tasks have been completed. The user can then finish unfinished tasks on a subsequent device. It’s unclear exactly what Microsoft is thinking about, but CBS News calls the example of a long e-mail, where the session manager keeps track of which part the user still has to read.

For example, the technology in the patent application can be used in Windows 8. The new version of Windows, which should be released this fall, runs on tablets, notebooks and desktops. According to rumors, Microsoft will also integrate Windows 8 more with its smartphone operating system Windows Phone. Exactly what that will look like is still unclear. Vodafone previously said that Windows 8 and Windows Phone would get the same kernel.
