Microsoft to release external game storage for Xbox One ‘short term’
The Xbox One will get support for external game storage “short term”. This was confirmed by Xbox Community Manager Larry Hryb after a question about this. The functionality has been in the pipeline for some time, but Microsoft has never given any clarity about a release term.
Hryb released in a Reddit post that the external storage for the Xbox One is coming, MP1st discovered. The director of programming gave no further details, other than that the opportunity should come soon. It is not yet known how much external storage can be purchased exactly.
The option for external storage with the Xbox One has been in the pipeline for some time. Reports about this already circulated last year. At the time, Microsoft said that the external storage feature had not been removed, but had to temporarily make way for other features that had to be finished before the new console’s launch.
The 500GB internal storage of the Xbox One could be supplemented with an external hard drive that can be connected to the device via one of the USB 3.0 connections, Microsoft said. This option would have been chosen because users cannot easily replace the internal drive. With the major competitor, the Playstation 4 from Sony, this is possible due to the standard 2.5” form factor.
