Microsoft suspends rollout of Windows 8.1 Update to WSUS servers

Microsoft has withdrawn the update for Windows 8.1 it released Tuesday from WSUS servers because some systems experienced problems connecting to the Windows Server Update Services. Microsoft does offer a workaround.

The issue affects systems that have already pushed the KB 2919355 update to the latest version of Windows 8.1, which was released Tuesday. According to Microsoft, the clients will stop scanning WSUS 3.0 SP2 or WSUS 3.2 if the server is running ssl but not tls 1.2. Https and tls 1.2 are not enabled by default on WSUS servers. As a measure, Microsoft has temporarily stopped the rollout of Windows 8.1 Update KB 2919355 to WSUS servers.

Administrators of Windows Server 2008 R2 servers running WSUS 3.2 can restore scanning functionality by activating tls 1.2 or deactivating https. On servers running an OS other than Windows Server 2008 R2, disabling https should work around the issue. Once Microsoft fixes the problem, they should then re-enable https. It is not known when Microsoft will release an update that will fix the problem.

WSUS enables system administrators to roll out Windows updates in their organizations. Administrators can choose to source the update for Windows 8.1 from Windows Update Catalog or MSDN for further distribution, but Microsoft recommends waiting for the official update that fixes the issue.

This problem does not affect private Windows 8.1 users: they can continue to download the update.
