Microsoft: Spartan browser to get extensions later
Microsoft’s Spartan browser, which ships with Windows 10, will receive extension support at a later date. Microsoft has confirmed that. It has been rumored for some time that the new Microsoft browser would have support for extensions.
Microsoft’s developer relations team has the support for extensions on Twitter confirmed. The support will not be available immediately. “We are working on an extension support plan for a future update to Project Spartan,” the team said on Twitter. It is unknown when the support will come.
Last week the rumor surfaced that the Spartan browser would have support for extensions. In addition, the browser would be compatible with Chrome extensions. Whether that is indeed the case, Microsoft leaves open.
Spartan is included with Windows 10, along with Internet Explorer. IE is mainly included for legacy reasons; Microsoft clearly sees Spartan as the browser with the future. For example, Spartan will receive support for Microsoft’s speech assistant Cortana, and IE will not.
