Several major companies are rumored to be interested in CyanogenMod, one of the most popular custom ROMs for Android. Maker Cyanogen is reportedly in the spotlight of Microsoft, Samsung, Yahoo and Amazon.

That is according to The Information, which is usually well-informed. Cyanogen is a recently founded company whose main product is the custom Android version CyanogenMod. The alternative Android installation has a large number of users and is now also included as standard on a number of smartphones. It seems that Cyanogen’s rapid development has sparked interest among major technology companies: Microsoft, Samsung, Amazon and Yahoo, among others, would be interested in an acquisition, according to The Information.

It is not yet clear how concrete a possible acquisition is. It seems that none of the interested companies have already made an offer. According to The Information, Cyanogen is “monitored” by the companies.

Microsoft’s interest is striking, because it has a competing operating system on the market itself with Windows Phone. Microsoft may want to offer a number of alternative devices with its own Android version, but the company announced last month that it would stop the Android smartphones released by the acquired Nokia phone branch.

CyanogenMod is based on the Android versions that Google releases, but is characterized by the many customization options that are built in. The alternative Android version is included on the OnePlus One.
