Microsoft replaces 2d emojis with 3d variants and brings back Clippy

Microsoft will replace 1,800 2d emojis with 3d variants in a future update, about half of which will be animated. The company wants to make the digital workplace more pleasant. Remarkably, the paperclip emoji is replaced by a 3d effigy of Clippy.

Microsoft had been planning to bring Clippy back to life for some time, according to a recent poll on Twitter. With this, the company measured how many people were interested in seeing the virtual assistant, which made its appearance in Office 97, return as a 3D emoji in Windows and other Microsoft applications.

The emoji version of Clippy is part of a future update that will replace 1800 of Windows 2D emojis with 3D ones. About half of all redrawn emojis will also be animated, according to Microsoft.
