Microsoft removes Edge Legacy from Windows 10 systems on April 13

Microsoft is going to replace the old version of its Edge browser, codenamed Project Spartan, with its new version in an upcoming Windows 10 patch. That will be the Patch Tuesday update, on April 13.

Microsoft notes that those who have already installed the new Edge browser on their system, will not have to deal with a reinstallation of the browser. In those cases, only the old Edge will be removed from the system. Of course nothing will happen in this area if one has already removed the old Edge itself. The Windows versions that will get this patch are 1803, 1809, 1903, 1909, 2004, and 20H2.

The change doesn’t come like a bolt from the blue. It was already known that Edge Legacy will no longer receive updates from March 9, but the moment of actual removal was not yet known.

Legacy Edge had actually been obsolete since the Chromium-based Edge appeared online in March of 2019. Motivations for the switch at the time were better web compatibility and less fragmentation for developers. Chromium-based browsers, especially Chrome, hold the lion’s share of the browser market.
