Microsoft releases Windows 11 version 23H2 for all users
Microsoft is releasing the Windows 11 2023 Update, also known as version 23H2, for all users of the operating system. The company emphasizes that this is a relatively minor update, with the default activation of Copilot being the biggest change.
In a blog post mentions Microsoft CEO John Cable 23H2 a ‘targeted, cumulative update’ with some previously announced and in some cases already released features. For example, the company previously released the AI assistant Copilot for version 22H2, but with the newer version of the operating system this feature is automatically enabled. Furthermore, the 2023 Update replaces the standard Chat app with what the company calls the free version of Microsoft Teams. The app is pinned to the taskbar by default.
The last relatively major change introduced with 23H2 is the separate categorization of system apps in the Start menu. These apps will be given a separate label and should therefore be easier to recognize. All cumulative changes from the past year released with this new version are on one separate page to view.
Although few new features are released with this update, Microsoft is talking about a reset of the support period. The company promises to provide each individual version of Windows 11 with security updates for two years after release. For example, since October 10, Windows 11 has become version 21H2 no longer supported. The most recent version of Windows 11 will be provided with security updates until roughly October 2025. Microsoft also only gives Windows 11 one feature update per year, unlike Windows 10, which received such an update twice a year.
