Microsoft releases test version of Windows 11 with tabs in Explorer

Microsoft has made a test version of Windows 11 available to some Insider users. The test version includes a tabbed Explorer. The company has also slightly changed the layout of the Explorer.

The Explorer tabs are in build version 25136 of the Windows 11 Insider Preview in the Dev Channel. Microsoft is initially releasing the feature to a limited portion of Insider users in that channel to monitor feedback. Depending on the reception does the company distribute the tabs in the Explorer to more test users.

Microsoft has also made some minor changes to the File Explorer layout. In the right side panel, the access to OneDrive is labeled with the name of the account holder. Folders that users often open and the pinned parts are no longer collapsed by default as part of ‘Quick Access’, but can be accessed directly in the side panel. Furthermore, Microsoft has cleaned up the parts that fall under ‘My PC’: the Windows folders have been removed to put the focus on the PC disks, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft is also experimenting with more dynamic content in widgets. In addition to the current weather, the company shows live updates on sports and news. This also involves a cautious start with a limited group of users.
