Microsoft releases Office app for Windows 10
Microsoft has released the Office app for Windows 10 in its Microsoft Store. In an upcoming update to Windows 10, Microsoft will install the successor to the My Office app on systems by default
The Office app is a free app that acts as a hub to access the various Office programs on users’ systems and provides quick access to Office documents. This makes the functionality comparable to that of the existing My Office app, which Microsoft is already putting on Windows 10 systems.
However, Microsoft has expanded the Office app and puts more emphasis on Office Online, Microsoft’s free web-based office software suite. There is also extensive support for Office 2019 and Office 2016, while My Office was mainly intended for Office 365 subscriptions and mainly to bring users into contact with that paid offer.
The revamped app uses Microsoft Search, a feature that enables searching within Office apps and documents, including shared documents. For now, the Office app appears to be downloadable only in the US, but broad availability is expected to follow. In any case, Microsoft will place this on Windows 10 with an upcoming update and new systems with the operating system will also be supplied with the application by default, Microsoft previously reported.
