Microsoft releases Defender extension for Chrome

Microsoft has released a Windows Defender Browser Protection extension for Google’s Chrome browser. The extension must protect users against phishing via malicious URLs and e-mails.

According to the description of the extension in the Chrome web store Windows Defender Browser Protection keeps a list of malicious links and blocks them when users click on it. The extension then shows a red screen with a warning.
Chrome contains a similar protection against malicious links. Presumably, however, there is a difference between the lists of links that Google and Microsoft keep. The Defender extension is only available for Chrome, not for other browsers.
In Microsoft’s Edge browser, the functionality works even without installing a plug-in if users have enabled Windows Defender. Detecting malicious links works with Defender’s SmartScreen filter.
