Microsoft Office apps listed as ‘incompatible’ in Play Store for Chromebooks
The Android apps from Microsoft Office, such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint, can no longer be installed via the Play Store on Chromebooks with the Play Store on board. Presumably it has to do with the fact that the apps are free to use.
Microsoft itself has always said that Office on larger screens requires an Office 365 subscription. It does the same for Continuum, the system where users can use their Windows 10 Mobile smartphone with a monitor as a ‘desktop’.
Until now, Chromebook users with the Play Store were able to access and edit Office files without an Office 365 subscription by installing the apps from Google’s download store. Now, however, it says that the Office applications are “not compatible,” Chrome Story reports. If you find the apk files online, you can still install the apps.
Some Chromebooks have been supporting running the Play Store and installing Android apps since this summer. That support is not yet available in all laptops with Google’s Chrome OS.
