Microsoft will release an adapter for Surface Pro devices at the end of June, so that the Surface Port can be used as a USB-C connection. For example, users can connect a USB-C hub to the adapter to connect peripherals and displays.

Microsoft tells The Verge that the adapter will be available on Friday in the US for business customers for $80. It is not yet clear when the accessory will be for sale in the Benelux and at what price. The adapter was announced a year ago.

The adapter is only suitable for recent Surface Pro models, with model numbers 1796 and 1807, and the Surface Laptop, which carries model number 1769. These devices have a Surface Port that can be used to charge them, but do not offer USB-C support.

The large adapter has dimensions of 82x40x20mm and comes with a cable of 28.4cm long. The whole weighs 90 grams. Charging the Surface device via the adapter requires a 12v USB-C charger that can deliver a minimum of 27 watts. The adapter only has a USB-C port, users must connect a USB-C hub for more functionality, such as connecting displays or a network cable.

Microsoft has previously released the more expensive Surface Dock. That is a larger adapter that also plugs into the Surface Port and offers many other connections, such as USB-A, Gigabit Ethernet and two mini-displayports.
