Microsoft plans to release a preview version of the new Windows, Threshold, in late September or early October. That reports the usually well-informed Microsoft watcher Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet Friday.

According to the Microsoftwatcher, the preview version will be released to anyone who is interested. Those who want to try the preview must agree that updates will be pushed to the system on a regular basis. Microsoft would also release a new milestone build every five or six months, according to ZDNet.

Windows Threshold includes known fundamental changes to Microsoft’s operating system. According to the latest unconfirmed information, the charms bar for desktop users is disappearing. There will also be a new start menu.

It is not exactly clear whether Windows Threshold will be an update for Windows 8.1 or whether it concerns Windows 9. Microsoft would in any case plan to release the final version in April 2015.
