Microsoft makes WSL support for Linux apps with gui widely available
Microsoft is making the ability to run Linux programs with a graphical interface widely available. Windows Subsystem for Linux will also receive support for running applications that use the GPU for machine learning.
Developers can install support for gui apps, open a WSL window and run a Linux app with a gui, according to Microsoft. This allows them to run editors, programs and tools for Linux with a graphical interface. The support was already in the dev channel of the OS in recent Windows 10 Insiders builds.
In addition, Microsoft has made it possible for applications that run via Windows Subsystem for Linux to use the GPU for calculations. The company specifically mentions applications for artificial intelligence and machine learning that benefit from this. Microsoft announced the news at its Build developer conference.
