Microsoft makes preview of 64-bit version of OneDrive client available

Microsoft has released a public preview of a 64-bit version of the Windows sync client for OneDrive. The release should provide performance improvements for users who sync large amounts of files.

According to Microsoft, the arrival of the 64-bit client is in high demand. This is confirmed by the more than 15,000 votes on the UserVoice feedback platform for OneDrive. The released preview works in conjunction with OneDrive for work, school, and home use. Users must have the 64-bit version of Windows installed, along with an x64 processor. Users of a system with ARM64 processor should continue to use the 32-bit version of OneDrive for the time being.

Furthermore, Microsoft emphasizes that if users want to switch from the 32-bit client to 64-bit, they must have the same OneDrive version. The version number can be seen via the about tab in the settings menu of the software.

The 64-bit version offers potentially better performance because the 64-bit support allows more memory to be addressed. In particular, users who synchronize large amounts of files or large data files with the online storage service could benefit from this.
