Microsoft makes Edge Canary test version available for Android
Microsoft has made a Canary test version of Edge available for Android. This mobile browser is updated daily with new, potentially unstable features and is being developed in parallel with the Canary version of Edge for desktop.
The Microsoft Edge Canary Android browser has been on the Google Play store since Friday and was first spotted by a Reddit user. According to this user, the Android browser runs on Chromium 91 and gets a new interface. The browser can be installed on tablets, but then pages are displayed as if it were a smartphone, the Reddit user writes. Other users report that the browser supports 90Hz and therefore scrolls more smoothly than the regular Android version of Edge. The mobile browser now also supports the experimental features within edge://flags.
Darryl Brown, Senior Program Manager at Microsoft Edge, previously announced that Edge would be a public Android beta. This beta is part of Microsoft’s plan to unify the codebase of the different Edge versions. Now the Android version still runs on Chromium 77, while the Windows 10 version works with Chromium 89. Microsoft still has to develop functions separately for the different Edge versions, while this will no longer be necessary with the unified codebase. Microsoft also promised an iOS TestFlight version of Edge at the time. The current iOS version of Edge works with Webkit. That should soon also be Chromium.
