Microsoft has released a test version of its remote desktop app for Windows Phone. The app only works on Windows Phone 8.1, because it is a so-called ‘universal app’ that works on both Windows and Windows Phone.

Since universal apps only work on Windows Phone 8.1, it’s unlikely that the Remote Desktop Preview app will ever work on Windows Phone 8. Version 8.1 of Windows Phone is only available as a Developer Preview and will be available as an update for current devices next summer. Hatch.

The app allows users to remotely access and manage a Windows PC through a secure connection. The app also supports Windows gestures, such as swiping from the side to bring up the Charms bar.

Microsoft previously released the Remote Desktop app for iOS and Android. Six months ago, Microsoft already announced that a Windows Phone version was in the pipeline. Users need a compatible PC with the correct Windows version to connect. Only the Enterprise and Pro versions of Windows 8 offer Remote Desktop as a host. This option also exists under Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate.
