Microsoft Joins Open 3D Foundation Making Open Source 3D Engine
Microsoft has become a premier member of the Open 3D Foundation. That is part of the Linux Foundation that manages the Open 3D Engine. The first major release of that open source 3D engine came out late last year.
As a premier member gets Microsoft a place on the board of directors of the O3DF. Paul Olivier, who joins Microsoft as Principal Group Program Manager, takes on that role. The foundation is supported by dozens of companies. In addition to Microsoft, Adobe, AWS, Huawei, Intel, Niantic and Tencent are premier members.
The Linux Foundation founded the O3DF last year with the aim of accelerating the development of 3D games and applications. The foundation’s engine is a successor to Amazon’s Lumberyard project, which in turn was based on Crytek’s CryEngine.
In December last year, the O3DF released the first stable release of the Open 3D Engine. That was version 21.11 and at the time of writing that is also the latest stable release. The engine is available for Windows and in preview for Linux.
