“Microsoft is working on a new design for the Windows 10 interface”

Microsoft would be working under the codename Project Neon on a new design language, which should be the successor of the design that Microsoft introduced with Windows Phone under the name Metro. The new design should come with the upcoming Redstone 3 update.

The reporting comes from Windows Central, which claims to have unspecified sources. Project Neon is supposed to improve the interface of Windows 10 by adding more ‘flair’ to it, in the terms of Windows Central. This should happen with animations and transitions, among other things, but the details about this are still lacking. Microsoft would also like to implement ‘holographic’ and 3D elements. Furthermore, the current design language of Windows 10 would mainly be continued, with ‘simple’ interfaces.

Internally, Project Neon has been in development at Microsoft for about a year. However, the company has not publicly disclosed anything about it yet. It is rumored that Microsoft will introduce Project Neon with the Redstone 3 update for Windows 10. However, it is expected to take almost a year before Microsoft releases that update. Redstone 3 is also rumored to bring x86 emulation on arm processors, something called Project Cobalt at Microsoft internally.

With Project Neon, Microsoft is probably building on the interface that Microsoft described as Metro when it introduced Windows Phone. After that, the design language was given other names with Modern and MDL2. Microsoft is now also using this style for the desktop operating system.
