Microsoft is testing free multiplayer for free-to-play games at Xbox Insiders
Microsoft has started offering free multiplayer for free-to-play games and other online features to Xbox Insiders in the beta program. Other Xbox gamers still need a Live Gold subscription for that, but that will disappear.
The Xbox Insiders Account reports on Twitter that multiplayer for free-to-play games, looking for groups and party chats will be free for Xbox Insiders immediately. This was already the case last week for everyone who has access to the alfaring. The rapid arrival to the beta program may indicate a smooth release for all users.
Microsoft announced earlier this year that it will be possible for all Xbox gamers to play the multiplayer mode of free games without having to pay for an Xbox Live Gold subscription. Microsoft announced that when it rolled back a price increase for Live Gold.
At the moment, this only applies to Xbox owners in the Xbox Insider program. It is not yet clear when all players will be able to play free multiplayer games without a subscription.
The change is relevant for players of games like Warzone, Fortnite and Apex Legends. On PlayStation consoles and the Nintendo Switch it is already possible to play such games online without a subscription.
