Microsoft introduces Segoe UI Variable font in Windows 10 test version
Microsoft has released a new test version of Windows 10 with a series of minor changes. Among other things, the company is introducing a new Segoe UI font, which would be easy to read at different font sizes
The test version of Windows is Insider Preview Build 21376, which has been released to users in the dev channel. The company highlights the addition of Segoe UI Variable, a variant of Segoe. The Segoe font type, according to Microsoft, was originally designed to display at 9pt and is less useful for larger or smaller font sizes. Segoe UI Variable is said to be more readable on smaller views than 9pt and look good on larger views too.
According to Microsoft, the new font type will not yet be immediately visible everywhere in the OS. Gradually this should appear in more and more places. It is a Windows 10 release in the co_release branch, where co stands for Cobalt. This is the code name that Microsoft uses internally. The final public release is expected to take place in the fall.
Other changes in build version 21376 include updates to the drag-and-drop cursor design, a tweak to the Connect app icon, and a series of fixes. A week ago, Microsoft announced that it will replace the default font of Office after 15 years. There are now five fonts to try. In a few months, Microsoft will choose the new default font for Office.
