Microsoft has officially discontinued the option that allows customers using “assistant technologies” to upgrade their old Windows version to Windows 10 for free. After a short extension until January 16, the upgrade button from that site has disappeared.

As of Wednesday, the button to upgrade has been removed from the US site for Users of Assistive Technologies. The text now states that the offer for a free Windows 10 upgrade expired on December 31, 2017, but Microsoft extended the offer in December via the American site until January 16, 2018. A new extension is not officially in it, it appears. now. For now, the file to which the upgrade link referred is still online, so users can still use the workaround, although it is not known for how long.

In addition, many users used the Media Creation Tool to upgrade Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 with the license for that OS to Windows 10 at no additional cost. Officially, this requires a license for Windows 10, according to Microsoft.

The official offer to all users to upgrade an older version of Windows to Windows 10 for free expired on July 31, 2016. Microsoft has so far made little effort to close all avenues for free upgrades. The company wants as many people as possible to upgrade to the latest Windows version, in an effort to maximize the use of services such as Cortana and the Microsoft Store. A license of the Home edition of Windows 10 costs 145 euros and for Pro customers have to deposit 259 euros.
