‘Microsoft has sold several thousand copies of the HoloLens’
Microsoft has sold several thousand copies of the augmented reality glasses HoloLens, says a CEO of the company. It concerns the developer kit and a version intended for business use. It is unknown if a consumer version will be released.
The commercial boss of the HoloLens project at Microsoft, Roger Walkden, tells The Inquirer that Microsoft is satisfied with the number of sales. He says Microsoft isn’t trying to sell huge numbers of the glasses, partly because it’s an expensive device and it’s not available in large numbers.
Walkden declined to provide further details about the exact number of sales or future plans for further development of the HoloLens. He does say that the current HoloLens is only the first version and that there will be future versions. He does not say when a new version will be released. It is also unclear whether a comparable device will actually come on the market for consumers.
The HoloLens developer kit was released in the US last March. Since November last year, the HoloLens has also been for sale in Europe for €3299. In addition, a Commercial Suite variant is also available for 5489 euros.
The current HoloLens contains a specially made holographic processing unit with 24 cores, combined with 8MB sram to process the input from the cameras and sensors. An Intel Atom Cherry Trail soc and 1GB ram are available for running apps.
