Microsoft gets Xbox domain names back from Chinese hijacker

Microsoft has won two cases it filed at the National Arbitration Forum in May. A Chinese man had registered a series of domain names with the term Xbox in them, including domains like xbox8.us and xbox8.org.

In addition to Xbox8.us and Xbox8.org, Microsoft has also reclaimed the right to use domains such as XboxPhone.com, XboxTablet.com, XboxLiveTV.com, and XboxCompanion.com from a Chinese named in the various cases before the National Arbitration Forum as Cheng Juan. The Chinese had registered the domain names with GoDaddy, a large American registrar.

It is unknown whether Microsoft plans to use the domain names. The most notable domains are Xbox8.us and Xbox8.org. An international company like Microsoft is unlikely to use TLDs like .org and .us. Furthermore, the name Xbox 8 is striking. Microsoft has not yet announced the name of the new Xbox. There have been rumors for months about a new console from Microsoft and one of those rumors is that the name Xbox 8 will be used to align with the names Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.
