Microsoft extends support for Skype Classic after user complaints
Microsoft has pushed back the September 1 deadline for Skype 7.0 Classic to end support for the desktop after users expressed dissatisfaction with the decision to retire the version of the VoIP client.
Microsoft does not give a new date on which support for Skype 7.0 will end. In the statement about the extension, the company talks about “some time”. Microsoft announced in mid-July that Skype 7.0 would no longer receive support as of September 1, and recommended that users update to Skype 8.0.
However, many users complained that that version lacks functionality that version 7.0 has. They expressed their displeasure on the Skype forum, among others. The users declare that they are satisfied with the interface of Skype Classic and that they find that of Skype 8.0 less pleasant.
Users are also bothered by Skype 8.0’s more limited chat search, lack of options to disable advanced formatting, lack of moderation options for rooms, and the fact that users can’t have individual conversations in separate windows.
In addition to extending support for Skype 7.0, Microsoft said it is listening to the feedback and working to bring all the functionality users are asking for to Skype 8.0.
